Hogueras de San Juan is one of the most spectacular traditional festivals in Spain, celebrated annually on the night of 23–24 June. In the city of Calpe (Costa Blanca, Spain), this festival is especially popular and mainly takes place on Arenal-Bol Beach, bringing together both locals and visitors in a vibrant seaside celebration.

A local celebration also known as “Fogueres San Juan de la Cometa” is traditionally held on 23 June and features evening activities, bonfires, and a festive atmosphere by the sea.

Traditions of Hogueras de San Juan

The Night of San Juan symbolizes the summer solstice and is considered the shortest night of the year. The festival has ancient pagan origins, where fire represents purification and strength. Traditionally, jumping over bonfires is believed to bring strength from the sun, while jumping over seven waves in the sea at midnight is said to grant wishes.

23 June (Sunday)

• 20:30 – Offering of flowers to the patron saint San Juan Bautista at the parish church
• 23:00 – “Cremà” (burning of bonfires and sculptures)
• 00:00 – Concert in the Racó area (Sanguangos band)

24 June (Monday)

Continuation of the celebration, with bonfires built from old wooden furniture and burned during the night to mark the arrival of summer and the new season.
