Exhibition “Juan Chabás, the Attentive Gaze of the Generation of ’27” in Dénia

From 28 November 2025 to 13 September 2026, the Museu Arqueològic de Dénia is hosting the exhibition “Juan Chabás, la mirada atenta de la Generación del 27”, dedicated to the life and creative legacy of one of the notable figures of the literary movement known as the Generation of ’27. The exhibition is located in the historic building of Casa de la marquesa Valero de Palma, at carrer Cavallers, 3, in the heart of Dénia’s old town.

The exhibition focuses on the figure of Juan Chabás Martí (Dénia, 1900 – Havana, 1954), a writer, literary critic and essayist whose name occupies an important place in the cultural history of 20th-century Spain. The exhibition allows visitors to discover his literary career, intellectual activity, connection with his hometown of Dénia, participation in Madrid’s cultural life, period of exile, and final years in Cuba.

An Exhibition Dedicated to the Life and Legacy of Juan Chabás

The exhibition presents visitors with a wide range of materials related to Juan Chabás’s life and work, including historical documents, photographs, manuscripts, first editions of his works, and other cultural materials from archives and collections of various institutions.

Visitors can follow the main stages of the writer’s biography: his childhood and youth in Dénia, his move to Madrid, his education and cultural environment, his connections with the authors of the Generation of ’27, his literary publications, the period of the Spanish Civil War, his exile, and his professional activity in Havana.

Special attention is given to Juan Chabás’s role in the literary and cultural development of his time, as well as to the recovery of authors whose work remained less recognised for many years due to historical circumstances related to war, the post-war period, and exile.

Exhibition Opening and Special Programme

The official opening of the exhibition took place on Friday, 28 November 2025, as part of a special day dedicated to the figure of Juan Chabás, an honorary citizen of Dénia. The event was attended by the director of the Instituto Cervantes, Luis García Montero, as well as poet, cultural manager and curator of the Spanish Ministry of Culture projects dedicated to the centenary of the Generation of ’27, Àngels Gregori i Parra.

Opening Programme

• 12:00: A conversation at the Auditorium of the Dénia Social Centre between Luis García Montero and Àngels Gregori i Parra, dedicated to Juan Chabás and the literary heritage of the Generation of ’27.
• 19:30: A guided tour of the exhibition at Casa de la marquesa Valero de Palma.
